2012 bmw 5 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New 528i adds efficiency to newly redesigned lineup. introductionfor 2011, bmw debuted an all-new, winsome range of bmw 5 series luxury mid-size sedans. Not surprisingly, 2012 sees the continuation of two of these offerings in reasonably unchanged form, with one very interesting exception, the 2012 528i. last year's bmw 528i was powered by a 240-horsepower version of bmw's 3. 0-liter inline-6. For 2012, however, the same entry-level 528i is now powered by a very different engine that points far into bmw's green future. The bmw 535i and 550i were all-new for 2011. the three variants, the bmw 528i, bmw 535i and bmw 550i, remain chic, crisp and distinguished for their aggressive styling and driving character. For the most demanding sporting driver, they are a bit on the big-and-heavy side, but their excellent vehicle dynamics and agility make them assertively proactive and manageable when faced with the necessity of an emergency avoidance maneuver, making them excellent family sedans. in furtherance of their safety-car orientation, the 5 series contain a comprehensive inventory of passive safety provisions, the multiple airbags and structural provisions that protect occupants in the event an impact occurs. The modular bmw interior, much of which finds its way into models from the top of the line to the bottom, is handsome and contemporary. Glowing tan and matte black contrast handsomely on the dashboard, these surfaces punctuated by elegant swatches of exotic wood. Instrumentation is comprehensive and flawless, in the german manner. For those who see themselves as having reached a certain level, there is nothing in this stylish cabin that will contradict that view. but driving excitement has always been bmw's stock in trade. With minimal frontal overhang and muscular flanks that seem shaped by this car's dynamic forward thrust, the 5 series never quite looks at rest. Their over-the-road qualities, or at least the promise of them, are surely what motivate many bmw aspirants. The bmw 528xi 49,000), bmw 535xi 54,550), and bmw 550xi 64,000) add all-wheel drive. the 528i and 535i are furnished with leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone air conditioning with micron air filter, 205-watt am/fm/cd/mp3 audio with 12 speakers, redundant steering wheel controls, pre-wiring for satellite radio and cd changer, idrive, power moonroof, bluetooth, wood trim. options include the cold weather package 1,450) that includes heated steering wheel, split fold-down rear seat, heated front seats, heated rear seats, retractable headlight washers; the premium package for 528i and 535i 2,250) includes power tailgate, universal garage-door opener, park distance control, leather seating. Active cruise control adjusts speed to maintain safe interval to car ahead, with provision to stop the vehicle completely if required; collision warning indicates an imminent collision, primes the brakes for full stopping power, and will automatically apply the brakes. Active blind spot detection monitors safe lane reentry when overtaking another car; a visual signal and a recognizable vibration in the steering wheel provide further warning. Lane departure warning monitors lane markers; when a lane change begins and turn signals are not activated, the system warns the driver with vibration in the steering wheel. Automated headlights follow curves in winding roads, and automated high-beam controls switch high beams on and off as required when drawing close to another car or meeting oncoming cars up to 440 yards ahead. Adaptive brake light system flashes bright taillights when abs is engaged or brakes are applied strongly. Night vision with pedestrian detection provides early detection of objects and pedestrians in the night; warning is provided by the control display and is displayed on the inner surface of the windshield if equipped with head-up display. Head-up display delivers vehicle speed and other data without requiring a glance away from the road ahead. All-wheel drive improves stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe outward appearance of the 2012 5 series is unmistakably bmw. It has no seemingly extraneous horizontal surfaces, as some recent bmws have had, adhering instead to the functional appeal that has long been bmw's signature. The traditional kidney grille is present, and the 5's shorter-than-ever frontal overhang, a bmw trademark, is accompanied by a traditional long hood and long, segment-leading 116. 9-in. Wheelbase. the cabin is set considerably to the rear, giving the profile a slightly wedged, coupe-like forward-thrust shape that, given the car's performance, is in no way misleading. The signature kink in the rear side window's aft edge confirms that this is a bona fide bmw. at the nose, the 5 series features bmw adaptive xenon headlights for powerful, safe forward illumination. And in daytime running, the headlight complex is illuminated by led rings of light. The turn indicators, as well, are illuminated by led. Following audi practice, taillight clusters are illuminated in an led pattern distinctive to bmw. interiorthe cockpit of the bmw 5 series is all business, deferring in every way to the driver. The dashboard is angled slightly toward the driver, while the horizontal lines of the dash add to a feeling of spaciousness for both front-seat occupants. And as expected, all controls are well placed, with the driver-only functions situated to the left of the steering column or on the wheel itself. The steering wheel contains 12 fingertip adjustments for audio, phone and adaptive cruise control. It also has a convenient tilt-away provision for easy ingress and egress. the front seats are supportive and grippy, with unobtrusive but firm side bolstering. The rear seats offer decent side bolstering, and rear seat legroom is generous. Without navigation, a 7-inch console screen is standard. The display is trans-reflective: sunlight actually enhances its legibility. And if the head-up option is included, relevant navigational instructions are added to the head-up display. six different two-tone interior color schemes are available, and standard dakota leather can be replaced.

An ultimate driving machine in size extra large. introductionthe bmw 7 series cars are some of the most dynamic and exhilarating large luxury sedans in the world. Completely redesigned for 2009, the fifth-generation 7 series line expanded considerably for 2011. The 740i and 740li were the first six-cylinder 7 series cars since 1992. Also new for 2011 were the activehybrid 750i and 750li models, combining power with fuel economy. And for those who want even more performance, bmw teamed up with tuner alpina to offer a new alpina b7. All-wheel drive is available for stability and traction in wintry conditions. after all that, changes are limited for 2012. All models now come with an ipod/usb adapter, sport steering wheel and rearview camera; while v8 models get upgraded audio systems and 19-inch wheels. Some option packages have changed. the 2012 bmw 7 series sedans comes in standard and long versions, the latter designated by an l in the numeric nomenclature. The bmw 740li, 750li and 760li have a wheelbase that's 5. 5 inches longer than that of the 740i and 750i. They're a little harder to parallel park, but they offer a ride that's even more luxurious and have considerably more rear-seat legroom. The long-wheelbase cars have their own roofline, and the silhouette is sleek. short or long, all bmw 7 series models have presence wherever they go. The 7 series body has no transparently gratuitous scoops or scallops, and the car's size and lines clearly say first class. the 7 series interior is classy and luxurious, like a richly appointed, roomy cocoon, protecting occupants from an ornery world. Just about every safety, comfort or convenience feature invented for the automobile is available on the 7 series. Some of the controls and features are overly complicated, however. yet dynamic verve is what really distinguishes the bmw 7 series: a combination of response, acceleration, smooth ride and sharp handling that few large sedans can match. Weight-efficient construction and innovative chassis technology contribute to the lively driving dynamics that many expect from a bmw. the bmw 750i and 750li feature a new-generation v8 engine, with direct fuel injection and twin turbocharging. This 4. 4-liter v8 makes 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, awesome numbers for an engine its size, while using less fuel than its predecessor to get occupants around town. It's matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The bmw 760li ups the ante with a 535-hp v12 and an 8-speed automatic. Total output is 455 horsepower and 515 pound-feet of torque. Zero to 60 mph arrives in just 4. 7 seconds and fuel economy is improved by 15 percent. Fuel economy is good but not great at an epa-rated 17 mpg city/24 highway. The alpina b7 boasts 500 horsepower from its specially tuned, turbocharged 4. 4-liter v8, and it rides on 21-inch wheels. lineupthe 2012 bmw 740i 71,000) and 740li 75,500) use bmw's turbocharged 315-horsepower 3. 0-liter inline six-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The li wheelbase is five and a half inches longer, translating to an equal increase in rear-seat legroom. New for 2012 are an ipod/usb adapter, sport steering wheel and rear-view camera. The 740li adds to that heated front seats, illuminated rear visor mirrors, and a load-leveling suspension. The bmw 750i 84,300), 750li 88,200), 750i xdrive 87,300) and 750li xdrive 91,200) are powered by a 400-horsepower, 4. 4-liter twin-turbocharged v8, again matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission. For 2012, wheels and tires now upgrade to 245/45r19; and a 600-watt, 16-speaker stereo with 9-channel amplifier is now standard. For 2012, the activehybrid is equipped more like the standard 750i/750il. It still adds a trunk pass-through with ski sack. the alpina b7 is offered in short- or long-wheelbase versions with rear-wheel- or all-wheel drive. Prices range from $122,600 to $129,500. Prepared by tuner alpina, the b7 is essentially an m version of the 7. For performance, it adds a 500-horsepower version of the 4. 4-liter turbocharged v8, active roll stabilization, and p245/35r21 front and p285/30r21 rear tires. It also gets luxury amenities, including a massaging driver's seat, ventilated front seats, ski sack, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, sirius satellite radio, and the head-up display. The long-wheelbase version also gets a power rear sunshade, manual side sunshades, illuminated rear visor mirrors, and the load-leveling suspension. even with such a long list of standard equipment, the 7 series models offer more options and packages than we have room to list. A few examples: an m sport package for six-cylinder 4,500) or v8 3,200) models adds a black headliner, lift-reducing aerodynamic kit, shadowline trim, and high-performance tires sized 245/45r19 front and 275/40r19 rear. The same package is also available 5,800/$4,500) with 245/40 r20 front and 275/35r20 tires on 20-inch wheels. A luxury rear seating package for long-wheelbase models 3,700) adds power heated, ventilated and massaging rear seats. A driver assistance package 3,500) comprises self-dimming headlights, lane departure warning, active blind spot detection; head-up display; and rear-, top- and side-view cameras. A massaging rear seat 200) for the 760il; dual-screen rear dvd entertainment with a 6-disc dvd changer; active roll stabilization 2,000); integral active steering 1,750); and infrared night vision with pedestrian detection 2,600) are just a few of the stand-alones offered. bmw's advanced safety system comes on all 7 series models, including multi-stage front airbags with occupant sensors, front knee airbags, front passenger side-impact airbags and front and rear side curtain head-protection airbags. Active safety features include dynamic stability control and dynamic brake control, featuring brake fade compensation, start-off assistant, brake drying, brake stand-by, brake assist, and active brake lights. Also standard are front and rear park assist, a tire-pressure monitor, and active front head restraints. All-wheel drive is optional. walkaroundthe 2012 bmw 7 series sedans look sleek and expensive, and for the price they should. What's better, virtually all of the odd, sometimes awkward design cues from the 2002-2009 models are now just fading memories. in front, the vertical bars in all 7 series grilles are spaced wider than those on other bmws, for distinction, though we're not sure it improves its appearance. It doesn't make a car look more stylish by increasing the gap between its teeth. Its kidney shaped grille is trimmed with a wider chrome surround that is slightly concave. The 760li's side gills, located where the doors meet the front fenders, have a chrome finish and v12 badges. the 7 series looks best from the side or front three-quarter view.
